Su papel solo se reconoci\u00f3 en la d\u00e9cada de 2010. Nacida en 1925, Gautier estaba destinada a ser pediatra. En los a\u00f1os 1950, se uni\u00f3 al equipo de Turpin, un investigador que estudiaba el s\u00edndrome de Down, caracterizado por el retraso mental y las anomal\u00edas morfol\u00f3gicas.   Partidario de la hip\u00f3tesis del origen cromos\u00f3mico de este s\u00edndrome, Turpin propuso la idea de utilizar cultivos celulares para contar el n\u00famero de cromosomas de los ni\u00f1os afectados.
